The free wilderness of the North was indeed novel because it already displayed signs of Autumn even though  further South there was summer weather.

Steve's family were from Eastern Europe, they were not accustomed to signs of Autumn in August.  For them, the Autumn colors in summer
was a novel experience indeed.

and some passed
time by reading books.

But all that changed when
the train arrived at Fort McMurray.

Steve's family was shocked.
